i am a cosmetologist and i do multiple types of hair. when i advise extensions to non-african clientell they dont feel comfortable because its is a thing dominated by african americans and rich caucasians wich most of them arent either. why do you guys think that black women wear extensions??

1. They are easier to manage than natural nappy hair.

2. They give the wearer options on different styles.

3. They give volume and length

4. You can do things with the extensions without harming the client's hair. (Like dying, coloring, cutting, styling)

5. Commitment to that style is as long as the client desires it to be.

The same reason white women tan....it's what Hollywood tells us to do and believe it or not we go ( a lot of us) go by what Hollywood wants....i don't wear weaves but i still perm my hair but that doesn't make me any less of a Black female....

they were told by the tv that beauty is a tall woman with straight hair. I think they should keep the fro. I look at face first, then body, then hair. in fact, i would take a beautiful, slim bald chick over and ugly, fat, nice hair chick.

because their hair is very hard to grow and breaks alot. the people that think that it is only for the African Americans are just stupid! it is for everyone, and the majority of people who purchase the hair are African American because of the type of hair they grow...

As a white gal who has dreamt of long hair-I have never truly considered extension-maybe because it isn't advertised to my age/racial demographic and because I'm not sure who does extentions and I always thought it would be expensive and a lot of upkeep.

I am a black woman and I do not wear fake hair. I think the reason for this is that black women are so caught up with this complex about their hair. Basically, they want hair like white women. They want to have the long silky straight hair that God gave the white woman but not the black woman. However, I refuse to fall into that trap. I wear my hair as natural as possible.

There is a warped sense of beauty - most people thing the straight sleek styles are more "beautiful". Personally I think natural is beautiful. Same with people's obsession for being thin - no one can see the beauty in any other body shape? Its time for people of all races to accept what is naturally beautiful instead of a textbook, monotonous version of what is attractive!

Being a man, I don't think of women as any particular race. They are just women, and all women want to look and feel pretty.

Because they like it, I suppose it might be easier to manage too, because alot of african american women have curly or wavy hair, my friend said she hated her hair because it was so difficult to manage.

Personally I wouldn't wear it because I don't like the feeling of fake hair, although I suppose you could get used to that, but for myself, I don't like it, I don't care if other people wear it, its just not right for me.

Sometimes you son't feel like dealing with your own hair.. !! That is the case for me. My hair is natural, has been for 8 years. It's pretty long too. Sometimes I get tired of it and I get my sis to cornrow it and sew some tracks in...my sis does such a good job that you would never know it isn't my hair.

Another reason is maybe some want a different look..something longer, something curly....some color... whatever....just something different.

Who cares really, as long as it looks nice. I have seen some jacked up looking weaves.....where is the hair police when you need them!!!

Because it takes so long for black women to grow long hair since it's so kinky. I think it actually grows as fast as white people hair but because it's so kinky you would have to use a straightner on it regularly to keep it looking straight. Now as to why i think you wear exensions is because you do and i see alot of black women wearing wigs as well Lets just face it, black women and men have hair like a briar bush lol.

For variety , a fun change that's all . some of my black friends hair is to short or as they say nappy, so it gives them a good alternative, besides there is nothing more sexy in my eyes than to see a beautiful black women with long and straight hair, or different extensions of various colors, This is coming from a white gentleman by the way. Besides we all try to look different at some time or other, either by our clothes or hair, I have colored my hair eggplant and thought it fun, no I'm not gay just wanted to do something different and my wife loved it

lil c - One thing black women are NOT - is "too lazy" when it comes to hair.

I personally have never worn weave until about 6 months ago. I went to my beautician as usual, and this particular time she asked me if I wanted to be a model for a tv program she was sponsoring. It was a free hair do so I said yes. Anyway she weaved my whole head, to give me that "Beyonce" look. (her words - not mine) I didn't like it at first. But loved what it did to my natural hair, which stays braided.

Since then I wore weave - even though my natural hair is longer. And actually no one knew it was weave until I told them - even my black sistas! (Normally we can spot weave a mile away!)

When it's all said and done - different strokes, for different folks.

Who cares anyway?

well the bad weaves you see is just a woman being lazy but the ones where you can't tell those are the ones that wear for the style. I really dont see why so many people care what black women do with their hair, including other black women. It's their head.

I've never had weave but I've had my hair braided with extensions, too itchy!

I used to work in a hair salon and most of the girls who came in for hair extentions were white.

At the end of the day every woman wants to look and feel confident regardless of their race, and will do whatever to enhance their appearance.

Long hair is more feminine and glamouros than short hair. Or is that just what we are taught by society and the media?

I've noticed that Black people with a certain hair texture (less curly) tend to have longer hair.

I've also noticed that most Black people I see with long hair (regardless of texture) have dreads.

I've even noticed now that I have dreads my hair is growing a lot more than it did before. I don't know why that is though.

Sorry I can't help I'm just as stumped as you. I don't think anyone knows the answer unless they do research into it. But I think there are scientific and social reasons behind it.

You don't have to be black to have hair extensions. Sweetie you have beautiful hair. They are many beautiful black women out there. Every race is beautiful!!

I am African American and I wear fake hair. I wear it because of low to no maintenance. One trip to the Beauty supply and you're done. It is a one time expense that is on and off;put it on and go take it off . The extensions are a different matter. I did wear braids a lot at one time. I have opted for ponytails and curly full-heads. The cosmetologists, though very good are expensive. I am a very full figured woman and I usually cannot find a shop that is will ing to invest in the type of chair I need .

If your white clientel don't feel comfortable with hair extensions, let them know that the celebrities have them all. the only thing i have noticed is that black people can handle the sew on kind because the hair is coarser. Some of the white people have brittle or too thin hair to hold the braids multiple times. i think hair extensions are the best beauty things on the market right now. When i had mine i would go out without makeup and automatically i felt more feminine. I haven't asked anyone, but in my thoughts, black hair doesn't grow fast enough or sometimes long enough and is easily over processed with chemical straighteners - it's a lot easier wear extensions. i'd like to know if i'm wrong, but that's my thinking. especially with today's style - stick straight or BIG curls it's easier.

But really...who doesn't want extensions? as long as it's real hair.
