General manager hair?

I recently got a haircut with designs (a star; roman numeral). I work in a catering restaurant. The general manger disapproves of it. He called me out in front of my co-workers stating the hair is "unprofessional." I told him why... he said guest will affiliate it with gangs. I responded that why others are permitted to have cornrows, twists, and dreadlocks. They are all the same. Women also come with red dye in their hair. The color red is connected with a gang... the Crips. How can i stand up to him. It appears to be a racial thing. With african americans, rarely nothing is said to them. With Hispanics (me), something is always said. Please help

You do represent the company, and if he chooses to set policy, which should be written so there is no discrimination, if you want to keep your job, you probably should compromise your fashion statement a bit, and make a change that will be acceptable. Life will be easier for you. I am sorry you were chastised in front of your co-workers, I'm sure that felt terrible, and it was not a good thing for your boss to react in that manner. It could have been done privately. Let him know you will grow it out and that you concede to make a change. If you don't want to do this, it would be a good idea to start looking for other work.

There is a difference between a symbol and a color, people are born with red hair not stars and roman numerals in their heads. It is a proffesional job, you will be serving many different kinds of people, either shave your head or get a different job!

You represent the company.

Unfortunately you can't do much other than complain to a supervisor...his supervisor of unfair treatment...he has broken no laws as it is a private business and unless you can prove discrimination you have no legal claim.

If it is their policy you have no rights. If it is not against policy you have nothing to worry about.

Be glad I'm not your boss.

It is very common for companies to have strict appearance guidelines for employees you have direct contact with customers. You might want to find a job where customers won't see you if your hair is that important.
