My friend one time used rags or towels to scrunch her hair and it looked very cute. You just need to, after you take a shower wrap a few chunks of hair and wrap it all around the towel then tuck it under somewhere or take an elastic and put it around the end of it. Keep doing it till all your hair is up then sleep like that. In the morning it will be kinky curly and you could put it the top up or put it in a very high pony tail and have it like, falling down the side of your face. If your hair is too short you can use bobby pins to hold the back up. Well good luck with it!

I dont know about the creme of nature stuff but DON'T use any of those Garnier Fructis products it may work for a little while but extended use will make your hair fall out at least thats what happened to mine.

Im not sure how fast hair can grow..but i would recommend using a hair strengthening shampoo and conditioner. biolage is really good if your looking for quality. Also I've also heard that wearing hair up can damage it, but a low ponytail will probably be fine. Plus it looks cute so you can try wearing your hair like that until it grows longer.

I have hair that is all the way down my back. I have similar problems. Cutting the ends helps keep the split ends in check but it doesn't make your hair grow any faster. If you want it to grow faster and stay healthy, take multivitamins and eat healthy.

Coloring your hair isn't going to do a huge amount of damage to it. Just don't overdo it. You don't need to color your entire head every month. Just do the all over color once and then touch up the roots as they grow out.

I also have the problem with the ends drying out and breaking off. What I do the help prevent this is to start brushing my hair from the ends up a little at a time. I do this once a day and finger comb it the rest of the time. Also, a spray-on leave-in conditioner helps as well. Aqualage works wonders for me.

One of my friends is very large chested and she told me that she has these things like hair bumps..kinda like the ones people get on their legs even though they have little or no hair there (African AMerican women mostly know what I mean) well she says she has these things on her breast but they are very small, however, she says when her breasts itch after getting out of the shower, some of them pop and she can see faint little blond hairs or sometimes they are black and blond at the tip or either there is just pus and a blackhead comes out, it is mainly UNDERNEATH her breasts.

My sister has the same problem. The doctor said it is the pores under there getting clogged and they unclog after bacteria(from sweating or getting moisture trapped under there) has set in and no where to go but out that is the pus she sees. Also the hair bumps is normal. We are actually covered by tiny hairs and they show up longer in some areas then others. I personally have 3 hairs on each breast around the nipple. Doc said don't pull but trim(pulling causes ingrown hair and will grow back thicker)

To treat the pus bumps. after the shower pat dry under there apply powder and elevate them for about 5 minutes until the moisture sets in also clean that area as if you were cleaning your face (like a facial scrub, this will remove the bacteria and unclog the pores before they become infected(the bumps she is getting) she'll be fine just keep those puppies dry and clean GOOD LUCK

Well, it sounds like she may have acne %26amp; blackheads on her breasts. She can use acne tretament to try nd prevent them. I am part African American and heavy chested as well and sometimes I get ingrown hairs on my breast that causes a pimple or bump and when I scratch it off puss comes out sometimes. Just use a body scrub to exfoliate her skin while in the shower. If that doesn't help she may need to see a dermatologist it may be skin chaffing from her bra.

Uh - this happens to many large breasted women; it's not exclusive to black or african american women or african women.

Many large breasted women will get clogged hair follicles underneath their breasts. Use a loofa sponge or a regular wash cloth when bathing -- and make sure to rinse all traces of soap very well.

Another thing she can do is make sure she doesn't wear a bra when she sleeps - so air can get to the underside of her breasts. A little sun is very helpful too.

This also tends to happen more frequently to women who've had breast reductions but still have a c or d cup size - since the skin is 'rearranged' when the breast reduction takes place.

It is probably some form of follicolitus, especially if she is damp there, mostly from sweating I would assume. Don't take my word on it.

I have my hair chemically relaxed, every 3 months. I use sedu flat iron and biosilk serum to protect it from the flat iron heat and it gives it shine.I wash my hair once a week and only need to flat iron it once a week also.

I am the exact same way! If you want to straigten your hair, you should definately not perm it. Use a chi 1 and a half inch flat iron. I use it. It is very pricy but if you are looking for something cheap, try the Cricket one and a half inch straightener. That is the best. I got one for 40 dollars. Don't use conair because that is for thinner and staighter hair. It's made for touchups. I hope this helps!

For straigtning your hair, I'd just get it done at a salon if I could afford it, but I can't and my straightner broke so I use a curling iron, and it works fine. I know that the Pink will help with your dry hair and that then it will make it easier when you straigten. The MaxiGlide is really good and your hair doesn't break!

Hair is too be worn in whatever way makes You feel good as a person, male or female. If that means shaving it bald, sticking it straight up, or out to the side like your in a wind tunnel then do it. Come at your mom from a different angle. Instead of "It's Stupid that way." try "I feel stupid. I don't want to feel stupid." be sure to come at her calmly expressing You feeling about the hair style you want. ( How it makes you feel, why you feel this way, ect.) I think it partly depends on the shape of your face, and partly on the texture of your hair. For the most part, if you hair is softer then flipping the ends up looks pretty because it sort of floats. If you hair is stiffer (which yours probably is) I don't think it looks as good. Just my opinion, of course. It's YOUR hair - you shouldn't be forced to wear it a way that doesn't make you feel your best! ....and I don't believe that any race has a way they are "supposed" to wear their hair.

I am African American. I wear my hair straight all the time. You can't say that African Americans don't wear their hair a certain way. You can wear you hair anyway you want. Now since you are a minor and still live with your mom then you have to follow her rules...but to certain extent. Don't argue with your mom, but sit down and try talking to her.Be respectful. Explain to her that you really don't like wearing your hair that way and say why. Try to make sure that you have specific reasons why. Don't just say because it looks stupid. Then ask her to talk to you and explain what it is that she likes about the flipped hair and what she doesn't like about straight hair. See if you and your mom can come to mutual agreement. Instead of wearing it bone straight or flipped try wearing body curls or a wrap. This way your hair has some turn and curl to it, but it's not flipped up or straight. The body girls of course will be bigger curls (this is how I wear my hair). To get this style I wash and set my hair. I roll my hair on rods anywhere between 2-4 inches in diameter or width. Then I brush or comb the curls to get them to look teh way I want. The wrap will allow you have straight hair with a slight turn. The style kind of colds to your face. Mothers can be difficult. My mom get doesn't like they way my hair looks all the time, but she doesn't try to control what I do to my hair. I pay for hair to be done every week, and I am no longer a minor. Take good car of your hair. Try to stay away from a lot of heat products like blow dryers and curling irons. The wash and roller set really is the health choice. And make sure to use a good moisturizing conditioner. I wash my hair once a week, and I use a deep moisturizing conditioner every two weeks. If you can find one get a silk or sating pillow case to sleep on this. This will help keep your hair healthy and looking good too. And always keep your ends trimmed and healthy. I love the way my hair looks and I get compliments on it every day. I have very thick coarse jet black hair.

Stats:

I am an African American

I do get perms

Its medium length a little past shoulders

It started breaking out about 2 yrs. ago and in recovery haha

It doesn't break out much at all...So now I'm trying to grow it back

My hair was long about 3-4 inches below my shoulder..then it broke out because of a perm..

Its really thick and I get perms every month because it gets hard to manage after then!

Please do NOT suggest to stop getting perms. I use a new perm that doesn't break my hair out btw.

I'm a caucasian woman with an 8yo daughter. When she talks about friends at school, people she sees, on tv, etc who happen to be African American, she calls them "brown". (She doesn't mean it in a derogatory sense, she will say, "There's a new girl in my class and she has brown skin and long black hair") For instance, today she bought a new African Amer. baby doll. She stated she wanted a "brown" doll because she thinks the skin looks prettier when its brown. I teach her that they call that African American doll or Black doll.. She argues with me and says that it's not black, its brown. lol My question is, I'm worried if Afr. Americans would take offense to my daughter saying "brown" ? Currently i have long hair and have been learning alot so...

i do not have a relaxer i stopped getting them 5 years ago ( and i've only have 3 relaxers in my life time so this is all natural) so can show you how to take care of hair with or without a relaxer. In order to have healthy hair while having a relaxer you need to concentrate on moisturizing the hair.

1. The shampoo, unfortunately many black women are using shampoos with alcohol and petroleum jelly. step away from them. Use Aveda's shampoo.. specifically the name is Brilliant...go to the website. I use it, i love it, it mouisterizes my hair and the products are natural. i have also heard that KeraCare's shampoo is good.

2. Okay, step two condition it and then it is time to comb it out, Do not use a brush on you hair when it is wet,,it will hate you for it then break off in revenge. Put your your sections use a big tooth comb, to untangle it

3. Do a hot oil treatment (before shampooing )atleast once or twicea month with extra virgin olive oil...repeat..EXTRA VIRGIN olive oil..not the regular stuff. unfortunately i have yet to take this step however my hair is doing great.

4. Okay on the daily basis you need to pay close attention to your hair...i recommend conditioning your scalp(3-4 times a week) and your ends(everyday) so that they will not get dry and unhealthy Petroleum jellly and mineral oil are weapons of mass destruction ( in other words do not use grease) it does so much harm to your hair it cannot be all explained here. So you ask what do I use...well natural oils grapeseed oil ( use it for hair it deflects heat so it is good for flat iron users like us)

jojoba oil(i use this for my scalp), extra virgin olive oil, sesame oil, emu oil, coconut oil...all these natural oils and more love you..i promise.I also use Aveda's Brilliant ( the name of the brand) emollient for my ends.

5. Next,,if you want your hair straight but still be natural it is time to get a freakin good flat iron.,i have the Chi..it does the job but I recommend getting the Sedu because of the good reviews. make sure to protect your hair..i have so thermal protector from Aveda. When flat ironing your hair do not let the iron stay on your hair for too long, just 1-2 quick swipes.

6. If you have a relaxer ( i have heard that Mizani and Affirm are the best relaxers) don't continue to relaxer all your hair everytime you go to the salon..just the new growth and try to stretch relaxers as long as possible.

7. You do not need to trim your hair everytime you go to the salon maybe every 3 to 6 months.

8. Wrap your hair in a satin or silk scarf to prevent damage before you go to bed.

9. Eat healthy, drink lots of water,

10 take multivitamins, and fish oil pills you can get from GNC.

An easy way to grow hair fast is to take pre-natal vitamins, I know it sounds strange but I have 5 kids and every time my wife was pregnant she took pre natal vitamins and her hair grew almost twice as fast as usual. They can't hurt you as your body needs it anyway just don't over do it and you should be fine.

Hey, you should wash you hair and put some leave-in conditioner. This will make you hair soft and natural. If the leave in dries you hair up, you should try washing it and putting gel. I like to use leave-in because it makes my curls expand but stay tight. If that still dosnt works...go to a black hair salon :) Good luck babe

Just try a texturizer. You can get them at any grocery store or beauty supply store. Texturizer help African American hair to have a softer look while maintaining its natural curl. I used on for years and loved it.

Sometimes you son't feel like dealing with your own hair.. !! That is the case for me. My hair is natural, has been for 8 years. It's pretty long too. Sometimes I get tired of it and I get my sis to cornrow it and sew some tracks in...my sis does such a good job that you would never know it isn't my hair.

I personally have never worn weave until about 6 months ago. I went to my beautician as usual, and this particular time she asked me if I wanted to be a model for a tv program she was sponsoring. It was a free hair do so I said yes. Anyway she weaved my whole head, to give me that "Beyonce" look. (her words - not mine) I didn't like it at first. But loved what it did to my natural hair, which stays braided.

Since then I wore weave - even though my natural hair is longer. And actually no one knew it was weave until I told them - even my black sistas! (Normally we can spot weave a mile away!)

When it's all said and done - different strokes, for different folks.

Long hair is more feminine and glamouros than short hair. Or is that just what we are taught by society and the media?

I've noticed that Black people with a certain hair texture (less curly) tend to have longer hair.

I've also noticed that most Black people I see with long hair (regardless of texture) have dreads.

I've even noticed now that I have dreads my hair is growing a lot more than it did before. I don't know why that is though.

It is a one time expense that is on and off;put it on and go take it off . The extensions are a different matter. I did wear braids a lot at one time. I have opted for ponytails and curly full-heads. If your white clientel don't feel comfortable with hair extensions, let them know that the celebrities have them all. the only thing i have noticed is that black people can handle the sew on kind because the hair is coarser. Some of the white people have brittle or too thin hair to hold the braids multiple times. i think hair extensions are the best beauty things on the market right now. When i had mine i would go out without makeup and automatically i felt more feminine. I haven't asked anyone, but in my thoughts, black hair doesn't grow fast enough or sometimes long enough and is easily over processed with chemical straighteners - it's a lot easier wear extensions. i'd like to know if i'm wrong, but that's my thinking. especially with today's style - stick straight or BIG curls it's easier.

The conditioner will soften the hair and reduce the amount of wear causing friction between hair strands. Reduce the amount of heat styling you do. Whenever possible, let your hair dry naturally.

Finally, get regular trims. If you are striving for longer hair, see your hairdresser at least every ten to twelve weeks to have one quarter to one half inch trimmed. This will get rid of any budding split ends while, at the same time, allowing for growth.

While making sure these things are taken care of, remember that the hair papilla, where the hair begins, is nourished by blood vessels, so concentrate on a healthy lifestyle. Make sure you are getting the essential nutrients required by your body and promote good circulation with regular exercise and scalp massage.

If I were you I wouldn't brush it at all, especially if its in its natural state, it can cause breakage. The main thing is to keep it moisturized. Not with petroleum based or mineral oil based products. Try things like Profectives lotions and water based creams, and hair oil on wet hair. Keep it clean by washing it every other day, like every three days, condition it frequently, comb and detangle with a wide toothed comb. About a year ago my hair wasn't even a full two inches long, now its almost to the middle of my back. I spray it every other night with a leave in conditioner, my favorite is 911, and I take vitamins specifically for hair skin and nails, I also take biotin, vitamin e and c... I use sulfate free shampoos and I'm in love with a conditioner called Paves Un-Damaged Goods deep repairing conditioning milk. I also am addicted to this reconstructor by soft sheen. In my growing out phase I wore wigs under a satin cap to minimize styling and stress on hair, it kept it from breaking off... I also wear a fitted cap at night to keep my hair from rubbing against pillows and becoming dry and breaking off..

You need to go to a salon. Not only will this be hard to do at home, but red does not like to stay in hair for very long (it fades very quickly). Hairdressers will have the good products that keep color in longer, and will also know the best techniques to prevent as much damage to your hair as possible.

To color your are at home this just isn't possible to achieve a red red color. Your hair needs to be pre-softened. Which means a couple of shades of your natural hair color need to be removed before applying the red red color. This is best left to the professionals. Yes it can be done at home, but the end result may not be what you really want. It can have blotching or just an outrages color. Reds are difficult enough to get in and keep in all hair types, not just in African American hair. Do yourself a favor and save yourself a lot of heartache. Go to a salon.

You risk really drying your hair out and causing damage. If you have your hair straightened than you should not color it again. However, if no relaxer than take a strand of hair and hold it between your thumb and forefinger and thumb and pull, if it breaks easily than don't re-color. If it stretches to at least twice its lenght than consider lightening. However, you will need a lighter color. Because your hair is naturally so dark, it will be difficult to get a red very vibrant without really lightening it. Good luck:)

That's good that it is last, so that you don't have to worry about drying your hair and restyling it quickly to head off to another class.

I think you just wear it down or braided or whatever you normally do, because when you get out, you can just have a little styling product with you to restyle it or dry it or whatever. I guess a headband or hat could keep it if you have to rush to get home on time, but then you could re-do it there.

Just be glad it's not first thing in the morning...then you really would have to just style it completely at school.

I dyed my hair "honey blonde" but it turned out to be "Ronald McDonald orange." From what I can tell from other responses, it might be good to use an ash-based demi-permanent color to fix this mess, but I don't know:

1) Does it make a difference whether I use "blond ash" or "lightest blond ash,"

2) How do I make sure I apply it evenly -- my hair is so frickin curly that I'm bound to miss something if I just apply it straight.

3) I'm just assuming that an ash demi-permanent color is the answer -- is there some other advice for black hair??

I would go to a well respected stylist... Color Correction is such a hard thing to do yourself, and the colors you buy from Sally's and other stores, are premixed and usually don't even tell what base it is... You never know what your going to get...Also, the color it shows on the box only turns out that color when you apply it on white or pale blonde hair....Save you hair more damage by going to someone who has experience with this kind of mess... It will be a little more expensive, but well worth it in the end...

Sounds like you didn't leave the dye on long enough. Pulled most of the color out, but didn't get the honey blonde. Get to a salon asap. They have the miracle stuff to pull out what you used, and then can dye your hair back to your natural color. My advise is to leave it alone and let it get healthy after that. Too many applications can damage your hair and make it fall out. Crurly afro american hair breaks easily anyway.

Try that shiny thick oil smoother on your hair. (like Citre Shine) It should take your curls and make them soft an beautiful. It will soften your curls and friz and with a headband you'll have a crips and clean doo.

First of all, I understand you said that your hair is kinky, so I am going to assume that you have not attempted to relax your hair prior to the coloring. If you hair is relaxed, I would not suggest you try to go any lighter. Next, typically using a box color on VIRGIN hair (not relaxed, permed, or previously colored) is only capable of lightening about 2 shades (unless you use a high lift color, in which case you could get 3-4 shades lighter.) So if your hair is darkest brown to black, what you have ultimately done is just exposed the underlying pigment in your hair and no extra processing time would have made the result any different. Ethnic hair is very tricky because it is much more delicate than other hair types. I would not recommend you attempt to correct this on your own. In answer to the question, an ash base will neutralize, to a small extent, the amount of red/orange tones, but probably not enough. Your hair should have been lightened with a bleach product as opposed to a box color. However, it will be extremely difficult and dangerous to try and get black hair to any shade of blonde due to the amount of processing time it would take to get to that point. By the time it is blonde, it will likely be on the floor. In conclusion, the best thing for you to do is to go to a salon to get your hair to a color that is tolerable. Once you have grown out your hair and it is completely virgin, you can try again, but have it done by a professional.

That is the only way to rid of the bleach. Or you can color over the bleached area with a color product close to color of your hair color. pomade... there are tons of them out there, all different consistencies, greasiness, smells... you'll have to find the one you like. i use murray's, it's kinda stinky, cheaply priced, but it really takes care of the frizz. just scoop some out, maybe the size of a dime, rub it in your hands together quickly to heat it up, work thru clean, dry hair, paying close attention to the ends. should do the trick

My advice is to have a professional wash it for the first year or until it locks. Depending on your hair texture, it could take your hair anywhere froom 3 months to 1 year or a little more to lock. When you wash your hair, it can unravel some twists and in order to put them back properly so you have the same size locks and it looks more uniform, it's good to go to a professional. In between washes, if your scalp is itching, I would recommend wiping between your twists with witchhazel. This is a gentle way to cleanse your scalp without disturbing your hair. Also, make sure you wrap your hair in a silk scarf when you go to bed.

I think it's common because of practicality.

I am a mixed african american male. I have naturally spiral curly hair thick in texture. I've tried many different products but nothing works .... if it does work it only works once or twice then my hair gets use to it and rejects it. I use Pantene Pro-V shampoo and conditioner (for women of color) and then I use Motions Ultra Conditioner (purple and gold bottle). You have to let the Motions conditioner sit for about 15-20 min. and then rinse it off. But these 2 products work wonders on my hair as I am also a mixed woman. do you have a relaxer? use this time to start growing it out. if you take this particular weave out, make sure you get your ends trimmed prior to putting another one in.

go to GNC (or a GNC type store) and purchase some hair nail and skin vitamins. the are great. biotin (a form of vitamin b) is the vitamin that is great for hair. find a good vitamin and take it daily while you have your weave.

as far as it being tight...it will loosen up after a couple of days :) if this is your first weave, you will soon love if you can handle it. i can keep mine for months, but others can only last a few weeks. it's very important to have a very good wash with a weave. my salon uses Sea Breeze to get between the braids and freshen them up. I love it. But you will need some type of oil b/c it will also dry out your scalp.

Get an anti breakage shampoo and conditioner and try it out. My hair would not grow at all because i bleach it every month and it was breaking off and i got pantene anti breakage defense and seriously it helped. But maybe that would work for you too. I have been taking hair supplements for the past 3 years and here is what I have found.

GNC makes a tablet called "Ultra Nourishair" in formulas for men and women, the pills are taken daily, 2 pills a day. They are HUGE and very hard to swallow, if you have any trouble at all with large tablets, then I wouldn't recommend these. The 2 pills also contain only 1200 micrograms total of Biotin, which is the main supplement needed for hair to grow faster and stronger. You should try to get a minimum of 2500 micrograms of Biotin daily to improve hair's rate of growth and its condition. Even though I took these GNC pills for 4 months, I wouldn't recommend them because they are not the most high quality pills available.

ProCaps labs makes a great supplement called "Hair Skin and Nails" formula, here is the link for that

well i've heard that vitamin E pills help hair grow and nails grow but i'm not sure how long it takes. but a cousin of mine(a hair dresser btw) that lost her hair to cancer, grew it back to almost halfway to her shoulder using this deep conditoner called Nutress and BB super growth hair grease. after washing your hair put in the Nutress following its directions and sit under a dryer for about 10 mins. Wash that out and dry your hair and apply the grease. Do that like every two weeks and I'm sure it should grow a couple of inches or so healthy.

Suppose you were dating a man ("light-skinned" African-American with tight but not "kinky" curls or perhaps some other ethnicity with similar complexion and hair texture) with very coarse, tightly curling facial hair. Which would you choose if the decision was yours:

1. He shaves very closely every day so as to have a silky smooth face. But because of this, he regularly has facial eruptions, scarring, and ingrown hairs, because the hairs grow back in on themselves.

2. He grows a beard and keeps it neatly trimmed. But because of this, he is often mistaken for Middle Eastern (read: "terrorist") and is generally treated with suspicion. Particularly bad when he travels by air and gets strip searched.

3. He shaves twice daily, but with an electric that is precisely tuned so as not to shave too close, thus avoiding the ingrown hairs. he usually has a faint "shadow" and while his skin feels smooth if caressed downward, it feels somewhat rough upward.

I tend to like facial hair on most men, but even if I preferred a clean shaven face, because he suffers from eruptions, scarring and ingrown hairs, option 1 is out of the question, for me. I don't think that all that discomfort is really worth it.

2 doesn't bother me as much as it would some people, since realistically, discrimination exists either way, and if it isn't for one aspect, it would probably be for another, towards anyone, for anything.

3 doesn't bother me at all either, a faint shadow is quite sexy on some men, as is a neatly trimmed beard, in my opinion.

Facial hair would be the last thing on my mind if considering a break-up. In that situation, I think that there are far more important things to be concerned about than if he shaves his face or not, and the effects. :-)

PS: Just read the travel thing, made me laugh. Personally I find facial hair attractive if it is kept neat and tidy. I think it gives a person character. My father who was mixed race always had a moustache and my husband has had a well trimmed beard and moustache since the day I met him. IMO you don't get much sexier than him. Of course that is only my opinion.

He grew a beard because of a sensitive skin issue as well. My one son always has a scruff which I think looks atrocious but apparently is quite hot at least with his late teen age group girl buddies.

I'd be fine with however he kept his beard. I'm pretty indifferent about the whole facial hair thing; as long as it suits him and it's cared for, I'm attracted to it.

If he was prone to breakouts, I'd probably discourage him from shaving so close. It's obviously too hard on his skin. I'd tell him to opt for more stubble. (And I'd probably prefer it)

Gnu, my brother is a discerning gentleman's barber specialising in traditional shaves. Ingrown hairs are the result of poor shaving technique and going against the grain of growth. This is difficult to avoid with commercial shaving tools, but a barber is not always on hand. A sharp blade, hot water and lather with a brush is the best medicine.

To answer the question, a man such as you describe should get to know a good barber and develop a shaving relationship, shave differently or go bearded.

If I haven't said anything constructive, discount my opinion. ; )

The one that feels the most comfortable to you. ;) I don't know think that there are any women that would choose 4 or 5 if it was their man. #3 would be the most comfortable choice and the one where you won't be burdened by the ignorance of airport security. #2 Would probably look better and more well-groomed.

Simply put, I LOVE facial hair (and of all degrees- neatly shaven or shaggy.) I don't caer if you are black, white, purple, red, or green. I don't know why, but I am fascinated by facial hair and it's a turn on for me. I always like it when my BF grows out his beard.

I'm African American. The last time I relaxed my hair was about 10 to 15 years ago and it all fell out. I think partially because the guy who did it "forgot" i had virgin hair. since then the only thing i do is color it. I'm hoping this time will be better. Any suggestions?? Well, bonding is the worst. That glue will take your hair out if you do it continuously and it does not last long. Fusion is a bit expensive and I heard that takes your hair out too, because when your hair is attached to that hair they use a special kind of glue and when its time to take that hair out it makes your hair break. I know sew in is itchy but it is the best option if yu want a weave that lasts for about a month.

I have this completely crazy hair.. If I let it dry naturally after I shower, it "inflates", and becomes very frizzy and blah. It is naturally wavy. I would liek to make it more managable (preferably even to a point where I can shower, put some product on, and go!)... Everything I have used so far doesn't work. It is shoulder-length, and I am not african-american (Just so you know..) Any tips?!?!

I have tryed sunsilk, garnier fructis, and herbal essence, and I still have to straighten it in order for it to look ok. My ultimate goal is beautiful hair that I don't have to use heat (straightener or dryer) on!

Maybe you shouldn't let it dry naturally. I found out that was the problem with mine. Use Pantene or Giovanni's (if you hate animal testing). I hear that Giovanni's has better results.

They have a wide variety of Frizz-Be-Gone products that are amazing. My friend has amazing hair (we were just talking about it yesterday) and she uses those. I'm going to the store tomorrow to look around for it.

Use a good hair dryer to dry your hair after applying the product, it should work out nicely.

i've just switched to burt's bee's shampoo (as well as their body wash). i know it's blasphemous lol. non-professional shampoo, and me being a hairstylist. but i've become overly sensitive to something (artificial color, artificial scent, or sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate, the harsh lathering agent in shampoos) which is making me itch so bad i was making my scalp scab up, and causing serious rashes on my neck. doctors were just giving me antihistamine pills and telling me to use hydrocortisone creams, which did nothing. my mother mentioned that i may just have a sensitivity and i should try a new shampoo and body wash. i looked for hypoallergenic, and could find nothing. i remembered burt's bees (i love his lipsticks; they have peppermint in them) and ran to walgreens and bought the raspberry and brazil nut shampoo for moisture and the citrus and ginger body wash. they don't lather as well as regular shampoo and body wash, but i don't itch (YAY!) and my hair and body feel clean. i didn't get the conditioner, as i use a biolage leave in. both products were $7.99 at walgreens. use small amounts, they are concentrated.

first, i'm white, and our two hair types are differnet, but i can say that a pair of silk pillow cases and sheets so you won't even have to wear a cap. i don't know where you live, but big lots has sheets for really really cheap. as for the hair splitting, i'd go to a salon you trust, and ask them about the products they carry, specifically for protecting hair from splitting. also, i think the shampoo brand sunsilk carries a line of product for splitting hair. i hope i hope you find a saln that you can be proud of!!

If your hair grows that fast it will be no problem to trim off a 1/2 a inch a month...getting all the damaged stuff cut off will help the most.... are you blowing it out? pressing it? The heat from the dryer and the irons will do the most damage....especially to the ends........ good luck.......

Unless you know what you're doing, go to a salon to do this. I've done my brothers and all I do is part in small sections (so it'll look neat), then there are two different methods. The first is to split that piece into two sections and twist around each other until the end. The method I prefer to use on guys is to get a bit of gel and use a small tooth comb and twist the hair into a coil type. Turns out really good, but then again, you couldn't do your hair yourself, unless you know how. I like the little twists/coils!

My hair won't grow into an afro because it's sortof straight. I can't get waves because of the lack of curls. The only way I can wear it is using a caucasian styling gel and putting it into place. Any advice would be appreciated on the process of doing this or from personal experience with people who have tried. I want to straighten my hair, but I don't want it to be all greasy and icky. I don't plan on using dye so that should help prevent damage. I'm desperate. My hair looks a mess because its growing straight, but it's still clumping together in that typical african american kinky fashion. If your hair is coarse you can do twists. Can you rock it natural??? I've been using Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Oil Shampoo and Conditioner on my hair and I love it. Paul Mitchell also makes a foaming pomade (I get it from Cost Cutters) that I put on my hair after I wash and condition my hair. I put that on before I wrap it. My hair is cut short so I just wrap it, put a rag on it and let it air dry. But how you can wear your hair depends on your texture. Sometimes when I'm between salon visits I just wet my hair and slick it back. But I can do that cuz I have a short hair cut.

I started doing natural just over a year ago. My hair is kind of short (not cropped or anything but just past my ears). I wear it in small twists. Every week or two, I wash it, condition it, and twist it while it's wet. Then I set it on rollers every night. I added a cinnamon brown hair color to it, and that made it even better. Now people swear I get my hair professionally done.

You should try it. It takes a while especially if you have longer hair, but you could always just make the twists bigger. You can wear it straight or curly. You can pull it back with a head wrap or pins to make it look more elegant.

Hi. I'm an African American female currently going natural from a relaxer. Tomorrow I am doing the big chop and getting twists. I've always had long hair so I'm not sure how to care for the twists. I plan on asking the stylist tomorrow but do you have any suggestions? My scalp gets dry too especially in the winter so what's a good way to condition my scalp and keep the style neat. Also, what should I do at night to keep from messing up my hair.

Congrats! I too am taking the natural challenge. I have always had longer hair too and was too afraid to cut it off. So, I started going to the Egyptians and getting my hair blow dried. Then when all my perm is gone or has 2 inches to go, I am going to cut it all off....

But for you, oil your scalp with shea butter in the natural state. When you get your twist, I would shy away from gels. You may want to try glaze instead if you still want your twists to look fresh and your edges to cooperate. The Shea Butter (By Organic Roots) will take care of the dryness, but it wont take care of the neat-ness. You may want some twist and lock gel. It is made especially for natural hair and doesnt flake as much. However, I think glaze is best.

well if you want something that won't be too dramatic i would suggest a nice neutral red or light brown, even a dark blond would look good depending on your skin tone are you more of a golden brown or do you have a pinkish tone to your skin? if golden/caramel then i would go with either the light brown or dark blond but if you are more peachy/pinkish brown i would go with the neutral red. most of the people i know with really dark hair do the extreme like platinum blond or bleach blond which looks pretty cool too. but very dramatic though! hope i was a bit of a help

it was probably written by someone who for some reason was offended by an employee at CVS and found it easiest to blame the store for racism.

I work at a restaurant, and we had one person become really upset because she said we wouldn't take her check because she was a minority. (we run our checks through an authorizing system linked to our bank, and she was denied because her bank account was closed)

Some people are just out to get free stuff, and they dont want to do it by working for it like the rest of us do.

I am African American however, I have to wash my hair every other day bc if I don't my scalp will have that "oily smell." It's not really the hair that has an odor, but it's the scalp. I have tried every shampoo and conditioner but when I wash my hair and get up the next morning my scalp will have that smell. I don't know what to do anymore. I know some people would suggest that I skip the conditioner, but I can't. I know my avatar has afro textured hair, however my natural hair is frizzy/ wavy so using a conditioner is a must. What can I do to get rid of this?

Try using a shampoo with tea tree oil in it. Tea Tree oil is a natural astringent so it might help. You can also try something like nizoreal or Perfect Results medicated shampoo and conditioner it is great for African American hair and it also has a great conditioner that comes with it. If all else fails try good ole' dish soap... the only con to this treatment is it will strip your hair of any impurities so you'll have to do a good condition to avoid dry scalp!

There are products out there that are supposed to remove certain odors from your hair-- can't think of any one particular product, but you could probably find something on www.beauty.com, or maybe www.sephora.com or www.ulta.com. There are also dry shampoo products that may help with the oily hair smell-- I'd check the same websites for more info.

you need to switch shampoos...and use a lemon rinse or apple cider vinegar rinse on your hair...skip the greases with mineral oil..they are horrible for your hair*****you need a deep cleaning shampoo a clarifying one like Neutrogena its gentle but it works and so does Nizoral and don't skip your conditioner

I'm African American (I'm gonna say that first and foremost 'cause that makes a huge difference) and my hair is wavy but thin, especially around the front and it's getting to the point where I can't put my hair in certain styles. I think it became thin because I always use to put my hair in tight ponytails but I'm slowly but surely getting away from that. Anyway, how can I make it thick again? I was told to use this treatment called fermodyl but it hasn't been working. Does anyone else have any ideas?

you should deep condition you hair twice a week with doo gro deep condtioner. it helps to revitilize and repair the hair. you should also use the anti-thinning shampoo it help the thicken the hair and to stop the thinning.also the antibreakage hair lotion, revitilizer grease and oils. also try protectiv they all work. you can find them at any black hair care stores because regular stores do not carry the whole line.

African American hair is wiry and thin. It is rarely thick. The three main areas of hair are the inner Modula, the middle Cortex and the outter Cuticle. To make hair thicker, you would have to change the structure of the Cortex which is impossible. It is genetic. That being said, the Cortex is made up of 9 amino acids in which 2 of them, your body can not produce, it must get from diet. Amino Acids are a protein so what's that mean? Make sure you eat enough protein. It is the building block of strength for your entire body. Your body can not produce protein, it must get it from food sources. Hair breaking (which is what you experienced pulling your hair back) can be strengthened with moisture. So make sure that your shampoo and conditioner are MOISTURE rich, especially for AA hair. It lacks moisture to begin with because the Cortex can not hold as much as coarse hair. Bottom line: use moisture shampoos and conditioners to help prevent breakage, eat a diet rich in healthy proteins and healthy fats (for added moisture) such as olive oil, nuts, peanut butter (natural kind), avocados, yogurt. And thirdly, you can't change the structure so anyone that tells you that you can, is lying and misinformed. Moisture prevents breakage.
